Date Announced For 2015 Cork City Sports

The 64th Cork City Sports will be held at the CIT Arena on Tuesday July 7th 2015. Once again this will be an evening meet  with the  international events commencing at 6:30pm.

Meet Dick Hodgins states “the 2014 meet was a great success, but plans are already in place to make the 2015 meet bigger and better, attracting more top class athletes”

We can’t wait.

Athlete Of The Month July

The Cork City Sports athlete of the month for July goes to Alex Wright. Alex a race walker with Leevale AC, won the the national senior 10,000m walk title at the Morton Stadium Santry in a time of 42:09.79. Earlier in July he finished 3rd in a high quality field of international walkers at the Cork City Sports setting a national record of 10 mins 58.47 secs for the 3000m Walk breaking the record set by his coach and mentor Rob Heffernan at the 2013 Cork City Sports.

Alex is part of the growing group of elite race walkers now based in Cork who can be seen training daily around the roads of the city. He has his sights firmly set on Rio 2016.

Athlete Of The Month June

At an award ceremony in the River Lee Hotel, Bandon athlete Phil Healy was presented with the Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month award for June.

On the 14th June at the EAP event in Geneva Phil Healy ran a personal best time of 11.53 in the 100m which was a qualified her for selection on the Irish team for the European T&F Championships to be held in Zurich in August.

Also in June Phil ran a very solid final leg for the Irish women’s 4X100m relay team at the European Team competition in Estonia. Subsequently Phil has had a very busy few weeks in July. After winning both the 100m and 200m National Under 23 titles at Cork IT track she ran a lifetime best of 11:36 to finish 2nd after a photo finish in the 100m at the Cork City Sports and after another photo finish at the National Senior Championships in Dublin Phil and Amy Foster could not be separated for the gold medal.

Javier Culson, Athlete of The Meet

Javier Culson showed why he’s the fastest man in the world over 400m hurdles this year by leaving the field trailing behind him at Cork City Sports. This was undoubtedly the performance of the night and was the committee’s unanimous selection for athlete of the meet for the 63rd Cork City Sports.

The Olympic silver medallist from Puerto Rico won in 48.41 seconds ahead of American champion Johnny Dutch (49.27) and Irish record holder Tom Barr (49.95).

Manteo Mitchell Returns To Cork

Manteo Mitchell a favourite from Cork City Sports of 2012 returns to compete in the 400m. His stated target is to run a sub 45 second 400m at this years meet.

Mitchell quickly became a story at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Running for Team USA in the prelims of the 4x400m relay, Mitchell suffered a broken leg. (see video here) When most would have quit, Mitchell finish his leg of the relay and helped Team USA to the fastest time ever run in the prelims in the event at the Olympic Games. They would go on to win a silver medal. After the Games when he traveled to the White House, President Obama told Mitchell it was one of his favorite stories from the Games. It was Mitchell’s second championship medal in the 4x400m in 2012 after also winning gold at the World Indoor Championships. A graduate of Western Carolina University, he broke numerous school records and reached the NCAA Outdoor Championship three out of four years. He is Western Carolina University’s first Olympian.
