Athlete Of The Month – November

Carmel Parnell of Leevale AC was the Cork City Sports Athlete of the month for November. Carmel is one of the most consistent performers in the history of the British and Irish Master Home International Cross Country. In November she competed in Glasgow  and won her 8th consecutive and 11th overall age group title. Carmel won the Over 60 section along with leading Ireland to a team victory as well.

Athlete Of The Month – October

Sinead Kevany of Midleton AC is the Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month for October. Sinead was an impressive winner of both the Cork County and Munster Novice Cross Country Championships in October.

Date Announced for 2017 Cork City Sports International Meet

The 2017 Cork City Sports International Meet will be held at the CIT Arena on Tuesday 18th July 2017.   The 66th meet will take place just two weeks before the IAAF World Championships in  London and will provide international athletes with an ideal warm up event in advance of the championships.

Meet director Joe Hartnett states ” preparations for the 66th Cork City Sports meet are well under way. The date which we have secured for 2017 will ensure many of the top international athletes will use the Cork meet as a warm up for the World Championships in London.”

Athlete Of The Month – September

Emma Murphy of  St. Finbarrs Athletic Club is the Cork City Sports athlete of the month for September.  Emma was the clear winner of the 35th Evening Echo Women’s Mini Marathon in a time of 22:03 which was held on the streets of cork 25th September.

The first Cork Women’s Mini Marathon took place in 1981. The event is Munster’s premier 4-mile road race, has grown to become one of the biggest sporting participation events outside Dublin and succeeds in attracting women of all ages and abilities. The Evening Echo have been title sponsors since the inception of the race, and its role is to assist with administration, advertise and promote the event.

The awards was presented in The River Lee and was attended by award sponsors: Elaine Fitzgerald, Marketing Manager Cork 96FM C103,  Mary O’Brien, The River Lee and  Eamonn Murphy The Evening Echo.

Robert Heffernan Presented Olympic Medal In Front Of Home Crowd

It was a long time coming, but Robert Heffernan finally got the Olympic medal-winning moment of glory he deserved at a ceremony in Cork City Hall.

The City Hall was packed with family, friends and supporters, all who all wanted to share in the  medal presentation ceremony with this very special athlete, who is loved dearly by all Corkonians.

Robert realised his life’s dream by receiving his bronze medal more than four years after the 50km walk in London 2012.  The 2013 World 50km champion finished fourth at the London games, but Russian Sergey Kirdyapkin was stripped of his Olympic title in March for a doping violation, moving the 38-year-old into a medal position.

Now he has a full set of medals European, World and Olympic.

Athlete Of The Month – August

Togher AC athlete Robert Heffernan is the Cork City Sports athlete of the month for August 2016. Robert travelled to Rio to compete in his fifth olympic games to compete in the 50K race walk. The race was a gruelling event in the Brazilian heat and humidity in which 30% of the athletes were unable to finish the 50K distance. Robert finished 6th in a time of 3:43:55.

Robert has a remarkable Olympic record since making his debut in Sydney in 2000. He finished 8th in the 20km in Beijing in 2008, 9th in the 20km and third in the 50km in London 2012, and fifth in the 50km in Rio.

This is Robert’s seventh Cork City Sports Star of the Month award, having last received the award in October 2014. Robert was also recipient of the Cork City Sports Athlete of the Year award for 2014.

Athlete Of The Month – July

The Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month for July is Daragh McElhinney of  Bantry AC and Colaiste Pobail Bheanntrai.  Darragh received the prestigious award for his excellent performance in the 1500m at the Schools Home International, in Kent, where he produced a stunning finish to take victory in a high class field. Darragh was one of just four Irish winners in the top quality international event.

Athlete Of The Month, June

At the monthly award ceremony in the River Lee, Charlie O’Donovan of Leevale AC was awarded the Cork City Sports Athlete Of Month Award for June. Charlie received the award for winning the Junior 1500m at the 65th Cork City Sports in an outstanding time of 3:54:36. This time was inside the qualifying standard for European Youth Championships in Tbilisi and earned him selection for the team.

In Tbilisi, Charlie comfortably qualified for the final where he finished a very credible 8th. Charlie is coached by Leevale AC’s Ken Nason, (a sub 4 minute miler in his day).

Cork City Sports Chairman thanked the O’Donovan family for their support and which Charlie every success in his future athletics career. He also thanked the event sponsors, The River Lee, The Evening Echo, C013 & Cork’s 96FM and Leisureworld

Athletics Person Of The Month, May

Leevale coach, Donie Walsh is the Cork City Sports Athletics Person of the Month Award for May.   Donie has been selected to travel to Rio as the Athletics Ireland endurance coach joining two of his athletes Lizzie Lee and Michelle Finn will be competing in the marathon & 3000m steeplechase respectively.

Donie will return to the olympics a mere 44 years after he competed in the marathon in Munich in 1972 .

Donie has been at the core of Irish athletics for most of his life. He earned a scholarship to Villanova University in the USA, and competed in several NCAA championships.

His greatest successes came in the early 1970s, when he won five 10000m National Championships on the track in six years, ran the marathon for Ireland in the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, and won numerous other cross country and track & field titles. He was a scoring member of the Irish team that took silver in the World Cross Country Championships in 1979, on the day that John Treacy won the race for the second time.

His contribution to athletics in Cork is immense and he is a worthy recipient of the Cork City Sports Athletics Person Of The Month award. Unfortunately due to an accident Donie was unable to attend the awards in person. The award was accepted on his behalf by his two sons Michael & Mark Walsh,
