New Heights At Cork City Sports

The High Jump competitions could prove to be a major highlight of the 66th Cork City Sports.
 
The fields in both the mens and womens event this year have some of the best competitors ever assembled in Cork. The meeting record of 2.30 in the mens event, set by Olympian Jamie Nieto USA in 2008, could be broken on July 18th. Likewise the womens record of 1.92 set by Amy Acuff in 2007 could also go.
 
In the mens competition one of the main contenders will be Chris Baker from the UK. He is European Championships Bronze medallist and Top 8 at World Indoor Championships. He is the number two British high jumper behind Robbie Grabarz Olympic Bronze medallist, and  has a best of 2.36 indoors and has jumped 2.27 outdoors already this year. This is over 7 and a half feet or six inches from the ceiling in the average house.
 
Jamal Wilson from the Bahamas with a personal best of 2.30 and has jumped 2.27 already this year.
Norbert Kobielski from Poland has jumped 2.26 already at the end of June and is at his best right now.
Mike Edwards GBR 2.25PB, Darius Purcell and Donte Nall USA 2.27 will all be in with a chance of breaking the record.
 
In the womens competition the main contenders will be Liz Patterson NCAA champion from USA with a personal best of 1.94 and Lavern Spencer from the Santa Lucia, Top 8 at Olympic Games and Pan American Games Champion with a personal best of 1.98.
 
When you stand next to the bar that these people jump over it is difficult to believe that it is possible to get your entire body over it. Cork City Sports invite spectators to get themselves to the standing area at the top bend at CIT stadium on July 18th to get a full appreciation of what these great athletes are capable of doing.
 
 

Cork City Sports To Be Broadcast Live On TG4

Cork City Sports will return to live television, when the legendary athletics meeting is broadcast live on TG4, to commence a multi-year deal.

For the event’s 66th running, July 18th this year will mark the first time in twelve years that the Cork City Sports will have aired on live television.

It will also be TG4’s first ever live athletics broadcast, having featured highlights of the All-Ireland Schools Track and Field Championships from 2004 to 2010. TG4’s athletics coverage resumed earlier this year with highlights of the AIT Indoor Grand Prix from Athlone.

Cork City Sports chairman Tony O’Connell said: “This is a big boost for the Cork City Sports in its 66th year. We feel that live television coverage both home and abroad is vital to bring our great meeting to the next level.”

Meet director Joe Hartnett stated: “Going back to the days of Steve Ovett and Yuri Sedykh in the 80s, and Sonia O’Sullivan in the 90s and 00s, the Cork City Sports has always been a highlight of the Cork sporting summer and the Irish athletics summer. Now we hope to find a whole new audience. By becoming higher-profile, we hope to attract many more quality names to Cork City.”

Donal Murnane, Cork City Sports PRO commented: “We are thrilled to be going live on TG4. The channel’s sports coverage is very highly-regarded and we look forward to the Cork City Sports becoming a staple of their live output.”

TG4 head of sport Rónán Ó Coisdealbha said: “TG4 are delighted to commit to this coverage of the Cork City Sports. As a supporter of all sports we believe it is paramount for headline athletics event to be available free-to-air. Athletics has provided some major good news stories for Irish sport down through the years, and in recent years via the medal exploits of Thomas Barr, Ciara Mageean, Mark English, Fionnuala McCormack and Rob Heffernan, and we hope to see more of them in future on TG4.”

TG4’s broadcast will run from 7:20pm to 9pm on Tuesday, July 18th, with commentary from Con Murphy and Dick Hooper, with Mark Rodden reporting.

Cork City Mile – Showdown

The Cork City Mile at the 66th Cork City Sports is set to be one of the most highly competitive races in years.
 
Two of the main contenders are Leo Manzano USA and Patrick Tiernan Australia.
 
Manzano’s list of accolades include Olympic Silver Medalist from the London Games, World Championships Silver medallist, IAAF World Relays Silver medallist and Diamond League winner. He is one of the great American milers having one the first Olympic medal for the USA over 1500m since the great Jim Ryun in 1968, and has been returning to form this season. Coincidentally his agents grandparents came from Kinsale.
 
Patrick Tiernan also has a strong Cork connection. Having been a student at Villanova he was coached by Corks own Marcus O Sullivan. He is a member of Melbourne Track Club and managed by Nic Bideau the partner of Sonia O Sullivan. Tiernan has already had a world lead time earlier this year in the 10,000m and last weekend finished a close 5th place in the Paris Diamond League meeting over 3000m against a star studded field.
 
Also in the field on July 18th are two of the University of Oregon star middle distance runners Sam Prakel and Blake Haney coached by Andy Powell who has coached Matt Centrowitz, gold medallist at 1500m at the Rio Olympics. Robert Domanic USA is also in the field and has run 3.54.7 already in the last few weeks.
 
This race will provide great entertainment for the spectators and should result in multiple sub 4 minute miles on the night.
 

Olympic 1500m Silver Medalist Is Cork Bound

USA athlete, Olympic 1500m silver medalist, Leo Manzano is confirmed to compete in the Mile at Cork City Sports.  In the men’s 1,500m final at the London Olympic Games, Manzano closed in the final meters to take the silver medal. It was the first American medal of any kind in the event since Jim Ryun won silver in 1968. 

The New Bolt Is Cork Bound

Sydney Siame, the 19 year old sprinting sensation from Zambia who has set one of the fastest time in the world this year 9.87secs (0.2 m/s) is set to appear before the Cork City Sports crowd at CIT stadium on July 18th.
 
It was a show of intent from Siame when he clocked 9.87 secs at an all comers meeting in Lusaka which has garnered him the tag as the NEW Usain Bolt
 
He further underlined the immense potential he had displayed since winning the Youth Olympics GOLD three years ago in Nanjing, and now he has set a new National Record (NR), eclipsing his previous Personal Best of 10.18s. By so doing, Siame has now qualified for the World Championships in London which will be his second appearance at the biennial event, having debuted in Beijing two years ago at age 17.
 

Two Of The Worlds Fastest Sprinters To Make Battle At Cork City Sports

Cork City Sports confirms Ramon Gittens Barbados and Sean McLean USA to go head to head in the 100M at the 66th Cork City Sports.

Two of the fastest sprinters in the world both with early season times of 10.1secs for 100m are to race against each other in the CIT stadium on July 18th.

We could see the first sub 10 second 100m at the Cork City Sports in its 66 year history.

  – Pan American Junior champion
  – Pan American Junior Championships Silver medallist

Ramon Gittens is
  – World Indoor Championships Bronze medallist
  – Pan American Games Silver medallist
  – IAAF World Relays Silver medallist

 
 

66th Cork City Sports, Officially Launched

At a ceremony in the River Lee Hotel, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Tony Fitzgerald and County Mayor Cllr Declan Hurley launched the 2017 Cork City Sports. Now in its 66th year, takes place at the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) Athletic Stadium, Bishopstown, Cork on Tuesday evening, 18th July at 5.30pm and will feature a host of leading international athletes from around the world.

Leading Irish athletes who will compete are; Cork’s own national champion Phil Healy, whose international debut came in the European indoors in Belgrade last March; John Travers, who finished seventh in the 1500m at the 2015 European Indoors in Prague; European Junior silver medalist Sarah Lavin; plus Irish international athletes Timmy Crowe, long-jumper Adam McMullen, Sam Healy and Craig Lynch.

Among the top international athletes to feature in Cork will be, Olympic 400m hurdles bronze-medalist and twice World Championship silver-medalist Javier Culson of Puerto Rico, Raymond Gittens of Barbados, Ghanaian athletes Flings Owusu-Acheampong and Gemma Acheampong – with eight African Championship medals between them – while double Olympic finalist Collis Bermingham accompanies fellow Australian athletes Patrick Tiernan, Jordy Williamsz.

In the high jump Jamal Wilson BAH, Mike Edwards GBR  are sure to put on a spectacle, both athletes with season bests of 2.23m has the making of a great competition.  While in the long jump there are a number of 8 meter plus athletes to excite the crowd, including Goa Xinglong of China and Corey Crawford USA .

Future Champions Juvenile 300m Returns To Cork City Sports

Cork City Sports Cork’s 96FM come together to provide young future champions the opportunity to compete at the prestigious international athletics meet.

Athlete Of The Month – April

The Cork City Sports athlete for the month of April is Shane Howard (Bandon AC and University of Limerick). At the Irish inter-varsity track and field championships held at the Cork IT track on the 8th April Shane won the long jump with an impressive effort of 7.31m.

Shane is hoping to get selection to represent Ireland at the European Junior & U23 Championships why will be held in Grosseto, Italy, 20 – 23 July.
