World champion Robert Heffernan and training companion Brendan Boyce have been selected to represent Ireland for the 50km walk at the European Championships in Zurich in August. Heffernan and Boyce were the first athletes to officially be named on the team which will not be finalised until after the national championships to be held in July.
This means both walkers can concentrate on their training and conditioning in the weeks ahead without the necessity of having to achieve target times in specific races. Both will be heading for Spain shortly to continue their preparations at altitude in a warm weather environment.
Last year at the Cork City Sports prior to his world championship triumph in Moscow the Togher man set an Irish record for the distance and this year Australian Luke Adam’s Meeting record of 10 mins 59.04 secs will be firmly in his sights.
