As it is thirty years this July since Yuriy Sedykh broke the world record for the hammer at the Mardyke on Tuesday 3rd July 1984 it is perhaps timely to recall that epic occasion when the official world record for the hammer was shattered on no less than eight occasions by arguably the two greatest hammer throwers of all time, double Olympic Gold medallist Sedykh and World Champion Sergey Livinov both from Russia.
The Russian duo between them account for the top ten throws set at the Cork City Sports over the years and it is unlikely that any other annual track and field meeting anywhere in the world could rival Cork’s Top Ten Ranking List.
